Jessica Wohl

This month, threesquared is excited to present a new series of collages by Jessica Wohl, Assistant Professor of Art at the University of the South in Sewanee. "Matriarchs" investigates women and their relationship to the home through presenting empowered, feminine creatures ruling over their domestic domains. Comprised of body parts and domestic furnishings, such as fingers, afghans, stuffed animals, and butcher knives, the anonymous "women" are presented as strong, powerful, alluring, and threatening guardians. Instead of being undermined or discounted by the associations with the home, they gain power from it. The hand-cut imagery is culled from magazine publications that portray idealized women, such as Women's Day, Good Housekeeping, and Playboy.

Wohl was born and raised in Minneapolis. She received a BFA from Kansas City Art Institute and an MFA from the University of Georgia.

The opening party will be October 25th, from 6-9 pm. The exhibition will host a closing reception during the November 1st Wedgewood-Houston art crawl, 6-8 pm.
